Electrical Work, Job by Job

This electrical work shows how a job gets written up, from the first thing the owner noticed to the test the electrician ran before leaving. The jobs are samples made for this demo site: each one names the city, the type of job and what was found and done.

Repairs and upgrades side by side

Some of the work here is repair: a loose connection that tripped a breaker every evening, an outlet that ran warm. The rest is planned work, where a panel had no room left, a family wanted a charger for a new car or an outage had gone on long enough that a generator hookup made sense. In every case the owners saw the price in writing before anything started.

What changes from house to house

Older Norfolk houses often have small panels and ungrounded circuits. Virginia Beach homes ask for chargers, surge protection and outdoor lighting that can stand up to salt air. Chesapeake houses add heat pumps, shop circuits and generator hookups for the longer outages at the edge of the city. The scope on each job says which of these it was.

8 sample projects, before and after pairs first.

  1. Bundle of wires coming out of a wall box during a renovation
    Before
Outlet boxes set into a wall with new wires run to them
    After
    Wiring and lighting

Kitchen circuits rewired on a remodel

    Town
    Norfolk
    Days on site
    3 days

A kitchen remodel in a Colonial Place bungalow where the counters shared one ungrounded circuit with the dining room. With the walls open, new circuits went in for the counters, the dishwasher and the range, with GFCI protection, before the drywall closed up.

  2. Electrician adjusting breakers in an open electrical panel
    Panel upgrade

Full breaker panel replaced, with room for an EV charger

    Town
    Norfolk
    Days on site
    1 day

A Ghent four-square with a panel that tripped whenever the dryer and the oven ran together, and no free slot for the EV charger the owners had planned. The load calculation called for a larger panel. The utility was booked, the swap took one day, and every breaker was labeled before the cover went back on.

  3. Hand holding the plug of a wood-finish home EV charger on a brick wall
    EV charger

Level 2 charger on its own circuit in the garage

    Town
    Virginia Beach
    Days on site
    1 day

A new electric car in a Kempsville garage, charging from a regular outlet at a few miles of range an hour. The load calculation showed room in the existing panel, so no upgrade was needed. A dedicated circuit was run to the garage wall, the owners' charger was hardwired and tested with the car, and the inspection was booked.

  4. Two technicians servicing a portable generator outdoors
    Generator

Transfer switch and inlet for a portable generator

    Town
    Chesapeake
    Days on site
    1 day

A Great Bridge family that ran extension cords through a window during every long outage. A transfer switch and an outdoor inlet now let the portable generator run the fridge, the furnace fan, the sump pump and a few lights, with the generator kept well away from the doors and windows.

  5. Gloved hands testing a panel with a digital multimeter
    Wiring and lighting

Breaker that tripped every evening: loose connection repaired

    Town
    Norfolk
    Days on site
    1 day

A bedroom circuit near Wards Corner that tripped every evening, and an outlet that felt warm. Testing found a loose connection at one outlet that had been heating for months. The outlet and the connection were replaced and the rest of the circuit was checked before we left.

  6. Close-up of a screwdriver at a row of circuit breakers and colored wires
    Panel upgrade

Whole-house surge protector fitted at the panel

    Town
    Virginia Beach
    Days on site
    1 day

Owners near the oceanfront who lost a furnace board and a television to a spike after a summer storm outage. A whole-house surge protector was fitted at the panel, and the panel and its connections were checked while the cover was off.

  7. Man installing a geometric pendant light on a ceiling
    Wiring and lighting

Recessed lighting and a dimmer in a dark living room

    Town
    Chesapeake
    Days on site
    1 day

A Greenbrier living room lit by two table lamps. Six recessed lights went in on a new dimmer switch, fished through the ceiling from the attic with no open walls, and a pendant was hung over the reading chair.

  8. House and trees lit by outdoor lighting at night
    Wiring and lighting

Outdoor path and porch lighting on a timer

    Town
    Virginia Beach
    Days on site
    1 day

A dark front walk and a porch light on a worn switch. New path lights and porch lights went on an outdoor circuit with weatherproof boxes and a timer, so they come on at dusk on their own.

How to read a job

These are sample projects, written up the way a real job gets recorded, so you can see what you would get. The photos are stock photos of each job type, not of these houses, and a before and after pair shows the kind of change rather than one job.

Town
Where the house is. Each town runs its own building department and permit.
Job type
Panel upgrade, EV charger, generator, or wiring and lighting. The job type decides how the work is done and how long it takes.
Days on site
Working days from the first day on site to the power back on. Permit and inspection waits come on top.
