Panel Upgrades in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake
An old or full breaker panel replaced with a larger one, so the house can carry an EV charger, a heat pump or an addition.
Panel upgrades in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake replace the breaker panel that feeds every circuit in your house with one that can carry what the house uses today. Many older homes have a panel sized for a time before central air, induction cooktops and EV chargers, and it shows: breakers trip when two big appliances run together, there’s no space left for a new circuit, or the panel itself runs warm.
Signs your panel is near its limit
- Breakers that trip under load. The dryer and the microwave together, or the air conditioner starting, takes a breaker out.
- No room for a new circuit. Every slot is full, or breakers have been doubled up to make space.
- A warm, buzzing or rusty panel. Heat, noise or corrosion at the panel mean connections are failing.
- Plans for something big. An EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub or an addition all need room the old panel may not have.
The load calculation comes first
Before anyone talks about a new panel, we add up what the house draws now and what you plan to add. That load calculation tells us whether the panel you have can take it, whether a few circuits can be rearranged, or whether a larger panel and service are needed. You see the numbers, not just the answer.
Panels we find around the area
The panel you have depends a lot on where you live. Older Norfolk houses sometimes still have a small fuse box or an early breaker panel that was added to over the years, with breakers doubled up and no room left. Some mid-century houses across the area have panel brands that inspectors and insurers now flag. Newer houses in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake usually have a larger panel, but it was sized before anyone planned for an EV charger, a heat pump and a hot tub in the same house.
Garages and outside walls are common panel spots here, and close to the water the salt air rusts panel covers and breaker contacts. Rust on the inside of the door or on the breakers is a reason to look closer, even when nothing trips yet.
What a panel upgrade includes
We pull the permit with your city, book the power company if the service changes, and set a day for the swap. On that day we switch off the power, take out the old panel, fit the new one, move each circuit across, label every breaker and add the protection the code now asks for, such as AFCI and GFCI breakers where they’re needed. Then we power the house back up, test each circuit and book the inspection.
Surge protection while the panel is open
A whole-house surge protector fits at the panel and guards your appliances and electronics from spikes after an outage or a lightning strike nearby. With the summer storms that roll through Hampton Roads, it’s one of the most useful small additions, and it’s simplest to add during a panel upgrade. It’s priced on its own line so you can choose.
Planning for what comes next
If you are thinking about an EV charger, a generator, a heat pump or an addition in the next few years, tell us at the estimate. Sizing the panel for all of it now costs far less than upgrading twice, and it leaves room for a generator transfer switch or a second charger later.
Your written estimate
The estimate lists the panel, the breakers, the labor, the permit and any power company work on separate lines. If a smaller fix will do the job, it sits beside the upgrade price, and you decide. We upgrade panels in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.

Questions about panel upgrades
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Most panel swaps take one day on site, and the power is off for part of it. If the power company has to change the meter or the service line, that adds a scheduled visit from them, and we arrange it.
Do I need a 200-amp panel?
Not always. A load calculation adds up what the house uses and what you plan to add. Many houses with an EV charger or a heat pump do need more room, and some only need a few circuits moved. You get the answer before any price.
Will my power company need to be involved?
For a larger service, yes. The power company disconnects and reconnects the service and may change the meter. We file the request, book the date with them and tell you when the power goes off and comes back.
My home inspector flagged the panel brand. Is it dangerous?
Some older panel brands have a poor record of breakers that don't trip when they should. If an inspector or an insurer has flagged yours, we open it, check the breakers and connections, and tell you plainly whether it can stay or should be replaced.
